Running data for every player on both teams

Distance, high-speed running, sprints, accelerations and top speed, measured from the match video while each player is on camera. Nothing to wear, and the opponent is measured too.

Metrics

Both teams
Every player the camera sees, yours and theirs
Honesty
Marked provisional; an unsure speed is left blank
Outputs
Player cards, the match report and the referee report

01Definitions

One set of definitions, used everywhere

The player card, the match report and the referee report all read the same numbers, measured the same way.

MetricDefinition
DistanceMetres covered while on camera
High-speed running19.8 km/h and above; women 19.0
Sprint25.2 km/h and above, for at least 1 s; women 23.0
Acceleration±3 m/s², held over 1 s
Top speedFastest half-second average; anything above 37 km/h is refused, never clipped
RatesPer minute measured on camera, so players seen for different times compare fairly

Women's matches use women's speed bands, set per match.

02How it is measured

From the picture to km/h

  1. Placed on the pitch

Each player's feet are placed on the real pitch, worked out from the painted lines in that frame.

  2. Smoothed with care

The path is smoothed by a filter that knows how fast a person can run and turn.

  3. Blank when unsure

Where the filter does not know a speed, it leaves it blank instead of guessing.

  4. Only on camera

Every figure carries the share of the match that player was on camera.

03Where you see it

Cards, reports and the referee

OutputWhat it holds
Player cardOne player's distance, top speed, sprints and heat map, the minutes he was measured, and a reel of his touches and sprints. Prints to PDF. Sample card
Match reportEach named player's numbers beside the team comparison.
Referee reportThe referee's distance, sprints and his distance to the ball, for every match.
Both teamsThe opponent's players are measured from the same video. A GPS vest only ever measures your own squad.

04How far to trust it

Provisional, and labelled that way

Positions are typically within about one to two metres, and distances and speeds carry that error.

We have checked the figures for plausibility against SkillCorner's open tracking data, through the same definitions: on broadcast footage they come out in the same range. That is a plausibility check, not a comparison with vests worn by the same players, so every running number is marked provisional.

Where the footage under-counts something, the figure is flagged rather than printed as fact. A very wide camera, for example, can show far players too small to measure a sprint.

  • Not a GPS vest

No heart rate, no load from contact, and nothing while the player is off camera.

  • Not every minute

Broadcast cuts away to replays and close-ups; those minutes are not measured.
